About Brighton Hockey
Brighton Hockey competes at a high level while keeping player development and team culture at the center. Dedicated coaches and staff create a welcoming place for players to develop skill, discipline, and teamwork. We play to win — and to have fun.
The program is open to all students enrolled at Brighton High School, with placement determined through evaluations at the start of each season.
Teams
| Team | Description |
|---|---|
| Varsity Navy | Top varsity squad — competes for the affiliated high school title and invitation to USA Hockey Nationals |
| Varsity Orange | Second varsity squad — full UHSH varsity schedule |
| Junior Varsity White | Developmental team |
Some players play for both Orange and JV depending on roster needs.
Season
Practices for the regular season begin in September. The UHSH regular season runs from early October through February. A typical week includes two practices at Cottonwood Heights Rec Center and one game, which could be at any ice rink in Utah.
Brighton practice times for the 2026-2027 regular season will be:
- Monday night (time TBD)
- Tuesday 5:45pm - 6:45pm
- Thursday 7:45pm - 9:00pm
Players attend two of these three slots per week depending on team assignment. Slots are selected to minimize conflicts with club practice schedules.
Club Hockey
Many Brighton players participate in both club and high school hockey. Brighton coaches understand that club participation often takes priority over high school hockey; however, we ask that players and families communicate conflicts as far in advance as possible and do their best to attend all Brighton practices and games.
Summer
During the off-season, Brighton holds regular development sessions with professional and volunteer coaches for continued player development. Unlike in years past, there is currently no Utah High School Hockey summer season.
Costs
Player dues cover league fees, ice time, jerseys, and team operations. Dues are set annually based on roster size and ice/league costs. They typically range from $900-$1100. Fundraising opportunities are available to help offset costs.
Coaching Staff
Brighton's coaching staff includes a head coach for each team plus assistants. Coaches are often parents, alumni, and other members of the Utah hockey community. Brighton Hockey Coaches meet the following requirements:
- USA Hockey registration (annual)
- CEP certification at the appropriate level for the team
- Age-specific online coaching module
- Girls Module (if any female players on the team)
- Background screening (every 2 years, UAHA-approved provider)
- SafeSport Certification
